| ARE ALL SPIRITS WHO KNOW WHO JESUS IS, FROM GOD? |
| Mark 1:23-24 And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean
spirit; and he cried out, Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee,
thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who
thou art, the Holy One of God. (KJV)
I John 4:2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: (KJV)

| Note: the assumption of contradiction is that a man with an unclean
spirit (or perhaps the unclean spirit itself) seems to know who Jesus is,
though he is rebuking Jesus and therefore must not be from God. However,
the 1 John passage says that all spirits who know who Jesus is are from
God.
The key to this one is the word 'confesseth' (Greek 'homologeo') in the 1 John passage. It means not only to acknowledge, but to acknowledge it thankfully. The spirit in Mark may be acknowledging, but is obviously not doing it thankfully. Not a contradiction. |
