| WAS ABRAHAM JUSTIFIED BY FAITH, OR BY WORKS? |
| Romans 4:2-3 For if Abraham were justified by works, he
hath whereof to glory; but not before God. For what saith the scripture?
Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.
(KJV)
James 2:22-24 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only. (KJV)

| These two authors are really saying the same thing, but from a different perspective. In Romans, Paul is speaking from God's perspective, that God knew Abraham had faith, and that was enough. James is speaking from man's perspective, that if we see someone who claims to have faith, but the person shows no works, that person probably does not have faith (and is therefore not justified). God knows who has faith. Man needs to see works in order to know who has faith. Not a contradiction. |
