| WHO KILLED GOLIATH? DAVID OR ELHANAN? |
| I Samuel 17:50 So David triumphed over the
Philistine (Goliath) with a sling and a stone; without a sword in his hand
he struck down the Philistine and killed him. (NIV)
II Samuel 21:19 In another battle with the Philistines at Gob, Elhanan son of Jaare-Oregim the Bethlehemite killed Goliath the Gittite, who had a spear with a shaft like a weaver's rod. (NIV)

| A close look at these two chapters suggests that these two Goliaths are not the same giant. The time frame for these chapters appears to be different, and the giant in 2 Samuel is labeled 'the Gittite' in an apparent attempt to distinguish him from the giant in 1 Samuel. Some translations (such as both King James versions) try to 'fix' this by labeling the giant in 2 Samuel the brother of the giant in 1 Samuel. It's more likely that he's the son of the giant in 1 Samuel, and took his dad's name (2 Samuel 21:22 kind of suggests this, also) |
