| DID THE ARK LEAVE THE HOUSE OF ABINADAB BEFORE THE DEFEAT OF THE PHILISTINES, OR AFTER? |
| II Samuel 5:25 And David did so, as the
LORD had commanded him; and smote the Philistines from Geba until
thou come to Gazer. (KJV) II Samuel 6:4 And they brought it out of the house of Abinadab which was at Gibeah, accompanying the ark of God: and Ahio went before the ark. (KJV)
I Chronicles 13:7 And they carried the ark of God in a new cart out of the house of Abinadab: and Uzza and Ahio drave the cart. (KJV) I Chronicles 14:16 David therefore did as God commanded him: and they smote the host of the Philistines from Gibeon even to Gazer. (KJV)

| This is not an inconsistency, but only two
stories which occurred relatively simultaneously being told in different
orders. Both books agree that the ark did not arrive in Jerusalem until after
the defeat of the Philistines. In the book of Chronicles, in which the Ark
leaves before the defeat of the Philistines, it doesn't arrive in Jerusalem
until 1 Chronicles 15:29. It probably left the house of Abinadab while the
battle with the Philistines was going on. The author of 2 Samuel decided
to keep the leaving from the house of Abinadab and its arrival in Jerusalem
together, while the author of 1 Chronicles decided to interrupt the story
to mention the defeat of the Philistines.
In case anyone finds this odd, the same thing happens in modern history books, as well. Telling stories out of order in an attempt to keep things topical is quite common and widely accepted. For example, I read a book about the history of rock music, and it mentioned the 1964 indictment of Alan Freed before the 1962 formation of the Beach Boys. They did this because the bulk of the Alan Freed story takes place before the bulk of the Beach Boys story. Not a contradiction. |
