| To my fellow Christian,
Paul has created many confusion and contradiction on the Women in the church. One minute he is for and another he is against. Paul was a man of his time. According to today's standards he was a sexist. Paul's letters have done great harm to women who have been called by God to preach. This is a known fact. We need to realize that Paul was a man of his time. He did what he had to do to increase membership in the Church. Christianity must change for the better or we will die like many other religions. PEACE.

I won't disagree with you that Paul, by today's standards, was a sexist. But it's unfair to judge people from 2000 years ago by today's standards. For his time, Paul was very progressive in regards to women. Unlike most of his contemporaries, he had no problem with women taking part in the church, with their doing works or giving prophecies. He apparently considered them not as strong-willed or knowledgeable as men (and with the way women were raised in the near-eastern culture, he may have been right for the most part). Of course, that doesn't mean that these same verses apply to today's women, who are easily as strong-willed and knowledgeable as today's men. I freely admit that many Biblical laws applied to those people at that time, not all people for all time. How many of us Christians follow all of the laws in Leviticus? You should also know that the 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 passage is taken out of context. Paul was not advocating keeping women silent in churches, but was quoting, then criticizing, those who felt that way (see verse 36). As for your claim that Christianity must change or die, I don't believe that anything can kill Christianity. Yes, we must clear up misunderstandings and take passages within their intended context instead of inappropriately thinking that everything the Bible says applies to all people at all times in all situations. Christians need to focus more on the spirit, and less on the letter of the law. Thanks for writing, and PEACE back at you! David |
